IEEE Technical Co-Sponsors
Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT)
The IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT) currently has about 2000 members worldwide. The scope of the society includes such issues as environmental, health and safety implications of technology; engineering ethics and professional responsibility; history of electrotechnology; technical expertise and public policy; peace technology; and social issues related to energy, information technology and telecommunications including ICT4D/Humanitarian Activities.
SSIT publishes a quarterly journal, IEEE Technology and Society Magazine and organises its annual flagship event, the IEEE International Symposium on Technology and Society (ISTAS).
The UK and Ireland SSIT Chapter has a particularly strong interest in Professional and Research Ethics and Technology and Development issues (ICT4D).
SSIT UK and Ireland Chapter Chair Prof Paul Cunningham will hold a working group meeting IST-Africa and mHealth4Afrika
This participatory workshop session will share insights into the objectives of IST-Africa and opportunities to collaborate in research and implementation projects in Africa. It will showcase the co-design process that informs mHealth4Afrika, an European Commission supported research project investigating the impact of the introduction of electronic health records and medical sensors on primary healthcare delivery in rural and deep rural clinics. This session will include a
demonstration of the current iteration of the mHealth4Afrika platform.
Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT)
The IEEE Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology (SIGHT) is an Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) program, instituted by the IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee (HAC).
IEEE SIGHT is a global network of groups consisting of IEEE members and volunteers who identify and address local problems by applying their technical skills and partnering with their local communities.
Prof Tim Lee, chair of the SIGHT committee for the IEEE, will attend to work with us on planning for a future SIGHT working group to address the UN Sustainable Development Goal for People with Disabilities. He will be heading IEEE Social Implications of Technology – Showcasing IEEE SSIT IST-Africa SIGHT.
This session will present opportunities to contribute to the work of the IEEE Society on Social Implications of Technology (SSIT). It will showcase the community engagement approach adopted by the IEEE SSIT IST-Africa SIGHT and current activities in supporting digital infrastructure and digital literacy in rural and deep rural health clinics in Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi and South Africa.
This participatory session will also share insight into the IEEE Humanitarian Activities Committee, as well as issues to be considered when establishing an IEEE SIGHT (Special Interest Group on Humanitarian Technology) and provide a forum to brainstorm ideas.”
Science Foundation Ireland
Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) is the national foundation for investment in scientific and engineering research.
SFI invests in academic researchers and research teams who are most likely to generate new knowledge, leading edge technologies and competitive enterprises in the fields of science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM). The Foundation also promotes and supports the study of, education in, and engagement with STEM and promotes an awareness and understanding of the value of STEM to society and, in particular, to the growth of the economy.
SFI makes grants based upon the merit review of distinguished scientists. SFI also advances co-operative efforts among education, government, and industry that support its fields of emphasis and promotes Ireland’s ensuing achievements around the world.
Microsoft Ireland
