Welcome to VSMM2017!
This is a really exciting gathering, and we want very much to focus on
this extraordinary chance to have you all gathered together, and to
dig into conversation together in order to launch some BIG
IDEAS that build further on all our work and enable us to move past
VSMM as well!
As you know, the format for this conference is deliberately
‘non-standard’ in that we are trying to avoid a whole long day of
small parallel sessions with lots of full powerpoint presentations but
not much interaction with the audience and with all of YOU.
We are delighted to have the IEEE SSIT team on board as co-sponsors,
and will look forward to discussing the Social Impact of Technology as
a big part of this year’s event!
Later today, we will be posting a live online file of ALL full papers and
posters so that everyone can choose to read papers in
advance.
After the event, we will choose papers for publication not
only in IEEE Explore but also in one of our FIVE top special journal
issues with MIT, Intellect et al. So for each paper you may get 2
publications, or maybe more if we find some common threads to develop
together too.
Tracks will be presented as a panel discussion where one author from each of your teams will be invited to
join your Track Chairs panel discussion. We will show a few slides
to be suggestive of each of your submissions, and will focus on the
big ideas that come forward from your work and the ways we might focus
on the big picture for future collaborative work. Your track chairs
will have been in touch with you all by now to discuss the specifics
of your sessions.
We hope you’re as excited about VSMM2017 as we are!
The key to making impactful multimedia and virtual environments is of
course building on what makes most sense for the ‘real’, and we need
to be present with and for one another to find the points of synergy
worth taking forward in that regard.
Looking forward to gathering soon to achieve that joint vision.
A note on transport:
Please also note that the venue for the Dublin part of the event is the Newstead Campus of UCD.
Shuttle buses will depart each morning and afternoon to and from the
Talbot Hotel to the venue. For those who chose to stay in central
Dublin, you will need to leave yourself roughly 45 minutes to travel
through Dublin morning traffic whether by bus or taxi, depending on
your hotel’s location. We strongly advise that you leave yourself
ample time to get to the campus and to the Newstead building, since
the walk from the main UCD bus stop to Newstead is itself a good 20
minutes!
Safe travel to all. Bring waterproofs or umbrellas just in case, as this is
Ireland!
Yours, Lizbeth, Lon, Shane, Jacki, Paul, Frank, Justin, Greg,
Gabriele, Mohamed, Eleni, Donal, Colin, Elysa, Aviva and ALL at
VSMM2017!
Invitation from the Conference Chair
On behalf of the local organizing committee and SMARTlab, the Inclusive Design Research Center of Ireland at University College Dublin, I would like to extend a very warm welcome! Dublin is a small but exciting European capital city with a rich cultural heritage strongly associated with great food and drink, beautiful landscapes, rich culture, art, literature and music, and the best of new creative technology innovation too.
I believe the conference we have prepared for you will be an exceptional scientific experience, and also a unique social and cultural visit that you’ll never forget. VSMM 2017 will provide ample networking opportunities and chances to exchange ideas with top scientists, researchers, professionals and practitioners from the broad range of disciplines informing the future of technology in Virtual Systems and Multimedia. Whilst maintaining the rigours of scientific quality, we will also endeavour to promote creative connections, interdisciplinary collaborations and discussions between leaders from industry, academia, the arts, and community groups too. In addition, the social programme planned is guaranteed to meet the highest standards expected by conference delegates at a world-class international meeting.
So come and join us: savour the cultural delights of Ireland and learn about VR, AR, Maker culture and 3D sensing, modelling and visualization as we take a peek through the looking glass and travel BACK TO THE FUTURE of VIRTUAL REALITY, at VSMM 2017.
I look forward to welcoming you to Ireland in 2017!
